L'Arche de Cuise in the Maritimes
Jocelyn Worster
Posted 2009-07-07 08:35:59

For two weeks in June, a few members of l'Arche de Cuise descended upon the Maritimes and wove their way through the communities of the Atlantic Region, their journey the realization of many years' dreams — and a great gift to us.

Sébastien Delille, a young man with a passion for motion and exploration, who has been a member of l’Arche de Cuise for some 16 years now, was the inspiration for this voyage. Jean-Jacques Bryckaert, a long-time member of l’Arche de Cuise, who came to Canada once before in the 1970’s, returned this time to renew his many connections and forge new ones. They were joined in their adventures by their respective house leaders, Stuart Corden and Ema Liufau.

The group arrived first of all in Saint John, where they were happily welcomed by McKim House and by former l’Arche de Cuise assistants Ellen Roderick and Jocelyn Worster. A few days later, Jean-Jacques and Ema crossed by ferry to Wolfville, visiting with l’Arche Homefires and then Halifax, seeing the sights and meeting up with a plethora of old friends. Sébastien, Stuart, and Jocelyn, meanwhile, travelled on to the communities of Antigonish and Cape Breton where they were warmly received for meals at various houses and for visits with the day programmes. Finally, the group reunited for a few days in the Halifax area to relax and connect with friends there.

Highlights for Seb and Stuart included the generous portions of Scotsburn ice cream encountered along the route(!); an afternoon at the swimming pool with Michael Boddy of l’Arche Antigonish; meeting some of the founding members of the Cape Breton and Antigonish communities; experiencing lobster, brownies, pancakes...; and the friendliness of welcome across the Atlantic Region – thank you to all who hosted us!
