At 66 and 62 respectively, and after having been separated for decades, Angus and Heather had both resigned themselves to let go of their dreams of marriage. They had dated when they were back in their 20's, but were told by the social workers who supported them that people with disabilties didn't have romantic relationships. So, they dutifully broke up.
About two years ago, L'Arche Cape Breton deliberately began to focus time and energy into the topic of sexuality, intimacy, and relationships for our community members. Outside professionals came to lead us in discussions and education, and we began talking with community members in an intentional way about feelings and relationships. Angus began to tell the story of his ill-fated romance with Heather. With the support of the assistants in his house, Angus tracked Heather down and they rekindled their flame. This past May, Heather moved to L'Arche and then this past weekend they tied the knot.
The wedding was exuberant, genuine, joyful, and holy. It was true to say that there was not a dry eye in the place. So many of us were overwhelmed as we recognized the significance of the moment we were witnessing. It was a true moment of transformation.
The local newspaper, the Cape Breton Post, ran a lovely story about Angus and Heather before the wedding. You can read it at www.capebretonpost.com/index.cfm
Please join us today in a prayer of gratitude for L'Arche and for love!
