Do or Dye for Solidarity
Carmel Hunt - L'Arche Edmonton
Posted 2010-03-11 09:10:15

It might not have been the last 24 seconds of the men’s Olympic gold medal hockey game but there was an air of anticipation in the community room at L’Arche Edmonton on March 1st.

Commit to Solidarity!

The year was drawing to a close and our Solidarity Committee was aware that the community still had a ways to go to reach our 2009 fundraising target for Solidarity. A decision had to be made- either ‘fess up or say we can’t do it or make an effort and do the best we can.

We decided to go for it and we’re glad we did!

Planning the event provided opportunity to talk about Solidarity and to consider the people who would benefit from our efforts. As well we had a chance to invite others to join us for the event.

On January 30th we hosted a Bowl-A-Thon. In trying to set a fundraising target and to generate some enthusiasm for the event, some light-hearted banter resulted in the committee making commitments for new hair do’s.

Do or Dye Time

Last Monday was “Do and Dye” time. Community members, friends and volunteers of the community gathered for prayer night, many sporting creative hair styles or hats – all in the name of Solidarity!

For $2500, Claudinei Cruz agreed to go from black to white

Accompanied by a combination of gasps, laughter, good natured comments and more laughter from the group, Pete Thomas revealed Claudinei’s hair.

For $3000 Pat McCoy said he would colour his white hair red

For $3500 Carmel Hunt would shave her head and Richard Nyaribo sporting a hot pink wig took the shaver to Carmel’s head

... and,  if by Feb 21st we raised $5000, Maria Mastrih would also shave her head.

Maria’s hair was safe only because we reached the $5000 target after the Feb 21st deadline ………. our final tally was $ 5049.25.

Pat Desnoyers had fun (lots of it!) colouring Pat M’s hair .

So, think outside the box and continue to make a difference in the lives of others.

Commit to Solidarity!
