Grieving

There are some exciting things happening beyond L'Arche in the areas of aging, dying and grieving in relation to people with intellectual disabilities. This is probably because of pressing needs and the desire in the developmental sector for people to continue to receive support in all areas of their lives as inclusively as possible.

Over the years we have supported people when they have experienced losses of family and friends. It seems it is time to be more intentional and informed about how we do that.

different ways to cope

Grieving seems to be a common word around Larche Capebreton these days. In less than a 2 month span, we lost two of our core members. For me... i seem to cope in ways differently than most. i like to surround myself with people i know, things i am familiar with and have a good time. To forget for a bit on what is going on, for me focusing on the passing of a loved one all the times does not help me to deal or to cope with what has happened. This does not mean i miss the person less than others. For me, i dont cry, not sure really why, i do however sometimes have issues with coming to grips on what has happened, if i stay in that familiar place too long. Me and a friend of mine have trecked to halifax for a much needed break from the reality of what we are living, and i must say it has helped me. it has helped me to know that my world does not have to stop, but rather i can enjoy my life with doing things i love to do.

There is much we can offer the person who is dying and those close to them during this dying process, if we are prepared .Here you will find resources that may be useful while supporting someone who is dying.

Many of the people with disabilities we have welcomed at L'Arche are now older, and some of the core members at L'Arche may experience the changes associated with aging earlier than is normal. We have much to learn about normal aging and about various forms of dementia, and we are being invited to enter into this learning. Here you will find information and resources about supporting people with intellectiual disablities as they age.
